Island Cup Challenge

Gros Islet and Vieux Fort football teams gearing for the challenge …

Vieux Fort South will take on Gros Islet in the finals of the SLFA-NLA Island Cup Finals at the Phillip Marcellin Grounds [PMG], in Vieux Fort today (Saturday).

This encounter has the making of a tough and challenging duel to culminate a thrilling and boisterous national football season.

The PMG has been the venue for many dynamic matches this season, and today’s fixture between the two finalists promises to be another thriller.

While VFS will want to take in the home advantage, nonetheless Gros Islet is also determined to add some silverware to its tally of titles.

Following two exciting semi-final matches at the Gros Islet playing field, last Sunday, VFS booked their finalist place with a confident 3-nil win over Mabouya Valley.

Scoring for VFS, were Antonio Joseph (5th min.), Antonio Myers (69th min.) and Paulson Joseph (88th min.).

On the other hand, the northern-based Gros Islet team had to dig deep late into the game to salvage a 1-all draw; before romping home in the penalty shoot-out to oust their opponents – defending champions Marchand 4-3.

Marchand was on the brink of scoring hovering on the edge of the box from around the 20th minute, but failed to make their chances count. Gros Islet, too fell short of the target as they counter-attacked.

But it was Marchand that took the lead in the 70th minute through Kershane Sealy. With the odds against them, the home side rallied on with a late flurry of aggression resulting in a string of corner kicks, before prolific striker Troy Greenidge found the nets in the 89th minute.

The third place play-off with Mabouya vs. Marchand comes off at 6. 00p.m; to be followed by the grand final featuring VFS vs. Gros Islet at 8.00p.m.
