Cul de Sac Bridge Reconstruction commences

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Ports, Transport, Physical Development and Urban Renewal has announced that the second phase of the Cul de Sac Bridge Reconstruction Project has commenced.

The works will involve the construction of the bridge’s superstructure, beginning with the assembly of scaffoldings for the construction of PC Hollow Slab Girders. Construction of the substructures was completed by the middle of October 2021, and the overall reconstruction was 40.3% complete at the end of October.

The Project for the Reconstruction of Bridges in the Cul-de-Sac Basin aims to mitigate against the severe flooding that occurs in Saint Lucia’s second largest flood plain. A grant agreement to finance the project was made between the Government of Saint Lucia and Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on August 2017.

JICA is the executing agency of the Grant Aid for the project. The consultant for the Design and Construction Supervision is undertaken by Nippon Koei Co. Ltd., and the Contractor is Hazama Ando Corporation (HAC).

The reconstruction is on course to be completed 21 months from the March 1, 2021 commencement date.

The Department of Infrastructure continues to caution minibus operators to utilize the layby along the Millennium Highway for the boarding and disembarking of commuters, and not the Cul de Sac / Millennium Highway intersection. Commuters are likewise cautioned to await buses on the layby.

Despite previous warnings, minibus operators have continued to stop near the intersection, and in one instance a motor vehicular accident involving a minibus occurred on Monday November 1.

The Ministry of Infrastructure is working closely with law enforcement to ensure adherence to the relevant signage.
